About

Special Health Resources is a nonprofit community health organization based in Longview with clinics across East Texas, including Tyler, Paris, Jacksonville and Texarkana. According to the organization, it began as AIDS Inc., the community response to the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980s, and later changed its name to reflect a broader mission and a wider set of services for whole families. Today SHR describes its services as including adult and pediatric primary care, adult and pediatric dental care, women's health, immunizations, STD and HIV screening and treatment, behavioral health care and substance use treatment. The organization says it accepts Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurance plans, and offers self-pay discounts based on income and household size. In Longview, SHR operates locations on Fourth Street and North Sixth Street. Because clinic hours, provider schedules and available services differ by site, patients should call before showing up to confirm what is offered where and whether an appointment is needed.
